Mike Bauer explains how to Set Up A Login.gov account (you may need this before signing up for Medicare.)

Enrolling in Medicare Parts A and B can be done in three different ways, and it’s important to choose the method that works best for you. You can enroll three different ways:

E

Online through SSA.gov:

    • Accept/check the terms of services.
    • Click “Start a New Application”.
    • Check “Who is Completing the Application.”
    • Check that you have a “My Social Security Account.”
    • Sign in with either Login.gov or ID.me account.
    • Complete the application.
E

Call 1-800-772-1213 : Speak with a representative who can guide you through the process over the phone. It usually will be a month or so before you can get an appointment set up.

E
Visit your local Social Security office: Go to SSA.gov/locator to find the location assigned to your zip code. You must go to that location.

If you are going to sign up for Medicare online you will need to set up a Login.gov account or ID.me account.

Login.gov Account Setup: Step by Step

E

Go to Login.gov Provide an email address you can always access (preferably personal, not work).

E

Create a Strong Password Make it at least 12 characters using multiple words, spaces, numbers, and symbols.

E

Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Choose at least one authentication method—but adding a second backup method is highly recommended.

More secure options: Face or touch unlock, authentication app (e.g., Google Authenticator), security key (like a USB key), or PIV/CAC card for federal employees.

Other options: SMS text message, phone call, backup codes.

E

Verify Your Identity

Take a picture of your ID (front and back). Acceptable IDs include:

Driver’s license (all U.S. states and territories),

Non-driver state ID,

U.S. passport book (rarely offered, often better to use a driver’s license).

Photo quality matters:

Use a phone or tablet camera—webcams are not supported.

Place the ID on a solid, dark background—avoid white or patterned surfaces.

Ensure even lighting, no glare or shadows, fully visible edges, and a clear barcode.

Hold the device steady; propping against a surface can help reduce blur.

If the online method fails or isn’t feasible, you can verify in person at a participating U.S. Post Office.

E

Confirm Your Personal Info

You may be prompted to enter your Social Security number.

Double-check that all information (like your name, date of birth, etc.) matches exactly.

E

Re-Enter Your Password

This step finalizes the identity verification and stores the confirmed details in your account.

E

You’re All Set

E

Now you can go to SSA.gov. Login using your Login.gov account.
