Medicare FAQs for Texans

Discover essential information about Medicare enrollment, plan changes, and advisor costs tailored for Texans.

When should I enroll in Medicare if I’m turning 65?

It’s advisable to enroll during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period, starting 3 months before your 65th birthday month and ending 3 months after. Missing this period may lead to permanent penalties.

Can I delay Medicare if I’m still working after 65?

If your employer provides ‘creditable’ coverage and has 20 or more employees, you might be able to postpone Part B without incurring penalties. Confirm with your HR department.

When can I change my Medicare plan?

Changes can be made during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7), the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (Jan 1–Mar 31), or Special Enrollment Periods due to life events. Medigap changes are possible anytime, but in Texas, health questions may apply.

Is there a penalty for enrolling in Medicare late?

Yes, delaying enrollment in Part B or Part D without qualifying coverage can result in lifetime premium penalties.

Does it cost anything to work with a Medicare advisor?

No, you won’t incur extra costs. Independent Medicare advisors are compensated by insurance companies if you enroll through them.

How do I know if my employer coverage is 'creditable'?

Check with your HR department to confirm if your employer’s health plan meets the ‘creditable’ coverage criteria, meaning it’s as good as or better than Medicare.
